Get A Healthy Colon With Calcium Supplements
Dear Reader,
Colorectal cancer is a dangerous disease, and many have no symptoms in the early stages. Now we are learning that calcium supplements (or non dairy foods fortified with calcium) may cut the risk of colorectal cancer based on the findings of a meta-analysis of 15 prospective observational studies by a team from Harvard School of Public Health. The work included 12,305 cases of colorectal cancer and the projects ran from just over three to as long as 16 years. The data showed that both total
calcium and that coming from supplements was linked to a lower risk of cancer of the colon.
In fact, for every 300 mg increase in calcium there was a 9% reduction in risk of this type of cancer. According to numbers from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003 to 2006), the median total calcium intake was 650 mg/day for those not taking supplements, and 1,000 mg/day for those taking supplements.
And while milk is the source of most calcium in many places in the
world, this product also has potentially harmful things like saturated fat, hormones and casein proteins. Since the analysis saw the same benefit for both dietary and supplemental calcium, you don't have to rely on a single food source to get what you need..
We know that calcium (along with vitamin D) is essential for healthy bones, yet research appearing in rather respected (JAMA, Heart, British Medical Journal) publications has raised concerns that too much calcium may be tied to bad
cardiovascular effects. The plaques that form in diseased arteries are mostly made up of calcium, yet there are also contradictory findings with reports of no link between calcium supplements and the higher risk of artery calcification. If you're concerned, or have heart issues, be sure to talk with your own doctor about your calcium intake.

Get A Healthy Colon With Calcium Supplements Continued...
This current meta-analysis has found that the current evidence doesn't support the idea that calcium supplements up the risk of heart disease in elderly females. What we do know is that colorectal cancer is a dangerous disease, the third most common cancer diagnosed in the U.S. The risk of developing life altering colorectal cancer is nearly 1 in 20, a bit lower for women than men, finding a way to combat it would benefit many.
Beyond being sure you get as much calcium as you can,
there are other things you can do to help yourself lower your own risk of colorectal cancer. What you eat plays a big part - a diet with lots of red meats (beef, lamb, liver) and processed meat (hot dogs, luncheon meats) has been shown to up colorectal cancer risk. Cooking meat at high temps (either broiling, grilling, frying) also has been linked to the creation of chemicals that can increase cancer risk. You're best bet Is to eat lots of fruits, veggies and whole grains as much as possible as
this has been shown to bring a decreased risk of colorectal cancer. Other dietary components have not shown themselves to affect cancer risk, at least not yet.
Being active on a regular basis is also key to preventing colorectal cancer, and something you can do to help yourself now, even if you've never been active before. Start slow and you'll be amazed at how much better you feel. If you smoke, you'll want to stop, and limit how much alcohol you drink on a regular basis - no more than
2 drinks/day for men, 1 drink/day for women.
Most of all, keep up with your age recommended cancer screenings. These procedures od save lives.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
